Betty Jo Phelps Barfield

Betty Jo Phelps Barfield passed away peacefully at her daughter's home on October 05, 2021.  Betty was preceded in death by her husband L.O.(Buster) Barfield, her father and mother, and four brothers.  She is survived by daughters Deborah Lasser and Dianne Haynes and her husband Randall and son Donnie Barfield and his wife Rayne. She is also survived by her grandchildren Sean, Joshua, Heather, Maegan, Rebecca, Moriah, Zoe, Caylen, Lydia, Abagael, and Bethany. Her great grandchildren that survive her are Elijah, Naomi, Orion, Aden, Tallulah, and Baby Boy.  She is also survived by sisters Ernestine Harper(Bob) and Edith Petty(Jim), and brothers Tony(Marie), Mickey(Marijo), Lee(Peggy), and Carl.  She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.

Betty was born to Ernest and Bernice Barnett Phelps in Ben Wheeler, Texas on May 17, 1937.  She grew up mostly in the Lindale area and graduated as valedictorian of Lindale High School in 1955.  Betty married Lee Owen (Buster) Barfield on September 3, 1955.  She and Buster were married for over 51 years, until his death in 2007.

Betty was an immaculate seamstress and used those talents working at Hollywood Vasserette, Cheerleader Teammates  and Dallas Manufacturing.  But her best works were the many, many things she sewed for her family.  Doll clothes, baby clothes, school clothes, curtains, slipcovers, wedding and prom dresses came from her talented hands. If it could be sewed on her old Singer sewing machine, she could make it.

Betty, also known as Mama, Meemaw, and Aunt Betty, had many other talents as well. She won awards for her photography work at HCJC(TVCC), she could take a pencil and pad and draw anything you could imagine. And, she was a great cook; her sweet tea was always in demand and she made a mean banana pudding.

Betty loved her family, good books, and her church, Bois D'Arc Baptist in Montalba.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

There will be a private family service for Betty at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, please send a memorial donation to Hospice of East Texas or to a charity of your choice.
